New writing

Supporting New writing is a key part of Putney Theatre Company's creative mission

Putney Theatre Company began presenting a New Writing showcase back in 2009 with Studio Shorts. Since then different members have taken responsibility for leading this initiative which involves:  inviting submssions (usually around a theme), working with a creative writing team to provide feedback to writers to enable them to develop their scripts, selecting plays and inviting directors and overseeing the whole process to the final production stage. Plays are usually performed in our studio theatre although sometimes on the main stage as well. They provide a wonderful opportunity for members to try out different roles and try out directing.

Rebecca Marangos - New Writing Lead 2018 - present

Rebecca joined the theatre working with the then Artistic Director as Stage Manager and soon after stepped into the New Writing Lead role coming up with a theme, selecting plays with her team and directing short plays.  Revolutions in 2019 was Rebecca’s first New Writing showcase and directorial debut. Rebecca successfully organised the first live performance via Zoom of her second showcase Truth or Dare in 2020. She has also held workshops for the local community and started the "Friday Club" for Putney Arts Theatre which involved reading and discussing plays and acting out scenes through improvisation or text.  Her background as an Acting Coach, Director and New Writing Lead has led to her working on an advisory level for new plays which will be showcased in the near future.

Amy Thurgood - New Writing Lead 2017-2018

Amy has been involved with PTC since 2010, primarily as a producer and event organiser. Before heading up the New Writing scheme in 2017/18 with shows Love in the Time of Tinder and Fate Expectations, she was part of the development team on several new writing projects as well as storylining and script editing the inaugural PTC pantomime Cinderellaland. She was also instrumental in producing the hugely successful Always Be Comedy nights. Outside the theatre, Amy is a television producer and development executive, working on shows such as Call The Midwife, Endeavour and McDonald & Dodds.

Marcia Kelson - New Writing Lead 2013 - 2017

Marcia has been a member of PTC for many years and has acted, directed, stage managed and produced for the company. For a number of years she was also in charge of costumes at PTC and made the silk and velvet curtains for our main stage. She has written a number of plays herself including Shakespeare's Operating table which won the best new writing award in 2014, and Bed 13 which was performed by PTC at the OSO Arts Centre.  In 2020 she had two short plays, The Plague Thing and Stranded, performed at the Edinburgh Fringe online which were awarded an OnComm – a new award recognising the best work online or broadcast during the Covid-19 lockdown. New Writing showcases she organised include: Fifty Shades of Funny and The Anniversary in 2014, Crime and Punishment and A Very Victorian Christmas in 2015 and Once Upon a Time in New Writing Land in 2016.
